Setting Sail - Vancouver to San Diego

We each have a small wheeled suitcase and a daypack as we leave on our two months long trip for the South Pacific. In it, we have clothes, shoes, swim wear and a good supply of books. It’s 6 AM when we board the ferry from Salt Spring Island to Vancouver. We love the fact that we don’t need to fly anywhere for this trip!

By 11 AM we enter the cruise terminal in downtown Vancouver. With passports and boarding passes in hand, it takes mere minutes to clear customs and walk onto our home for the next 56 days: the MV Zaandam of the Holland America Line.

Cruising.

It’s a very different way of travel from our usual independent travels. But we had enjoyed the few cruises we took - to Alaska, through the Panama Canal, etc. No driving, but you get to settle in one ‘hotel’ room and magically arrive at your destination. We may not be your average cruiser - we don’t party, or dance nor are we very social. But for many years I had one huge item on my wish list of travel destinations: the South Pacific. Come with us as we travel there...

Among Moai on Easter Island

Often, our travel destination is determined by which international school invites me to do author presentations and workshops with their staff and students. And almost always these destinations are fabulous and exciting. But our bucket list contained a few places that we wanted to see without waiting for a school. At the top of our list? Easter Island!
